Anchored Volume Weighted Average Price (A-VWAP)

Trading Term

The Anchored Volume Weighted Average Price (A-VWAP) is a technical analysis tool that combines the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) with a custom anchor point, allowing traders to calculate the average price of an asset since a specific event or starting point (e.g., the beginning of a trend, a significant price move, or a key news release). Unlike the standard VWAP, which resets at the beginning of each trading day, the A-VWAP is “anchored” to a particular time or price level chosen by the trader, offering greater flexibility in analyzing price action.

Features:

  • Anchored to a Specific Point:
The A-VWAP allows the trader to select an anchor point, such as a specific date, price level, or event (e.g., a breakout, earnings report, or trend reversal), and calculates the volume-weighted average price from that point forward. This helps identify key support or resistance levels.
  • Volume-Weighted:
Like the standard VWAP, the A-VWAP gives more weight to prices with higher trading volume, meaning that the average price is more heavily influenced by periods of higher liquidity. This makes it a more accurate reflection of market consensus than simple averages.
  • Flexible Analysis:
The A-VWAP can be used to track the average price of an asset over a particular timeframe, making it a valuable tool for long-term trend analysis, price discovery, and identifying significant price levels relative to historical data.

Traders use the A-VWAP to gain insights into price movements relative to significant market events, rather than just the daily price action. For instance, institutions may use the A-VWAP to gauge whether the current price is favorable relative to the price paid by large investors during a particular period, such as an IPO or major market event. It’s also commonly used to identify areas of potential support or resistance and to determine entry and exit points based on the volume-weighted average price since a key point in time.
